Ethiopia: Flower Sector Draws 39 New Foreign Projects in 2006/07

Some 39 foreign investment projects were licensed to be engaged in the mushrooming flower sector in 2006/2007 alone, the Ethiopian Investment Agency's latest data obtained by The Reporter indicated.

The number of foreign investment projects in the flower sector in the country has currently outpaced their local counterparts, according to similar data.

Presently, there are 161 licensed foreign investment projects registered for flower production activities, which constitute 68 percent of the total projects so far registered, comprising the local ones. According to the data, the number of local projects registered in the sector has reached 75.

The sector has kept drawing foreign investment to date, the data indicated. In the last one-month-and-half alone, five new foreign investment projects in the field were licensed whilst no local project in the sector was registered during the similar period.

Likewise, the investment capital registered for the foreign flower generating projects markedly stood higher than the amount registered for similar projects owned by local investors. According to the data, the investment capital registered for foreign flower farm projects reached close to seven billion birr versus the two billion birr capital local investors registered to engage in the field.

The flower sector, which currently offers job opportunities for tens of thousands of people, is expected to earn some 120 million euro in exports in the year 2007, marking close to a 50 percent increase against the previous year.
